GOPO Congressional Research V

This is the final stage of your examination of the Congressional races this fall.  It comes in two parts--the update and the prediction.

The Update:

Please update the status of the races you were focusing on.  This update for each race should include:

___ the most recent poll(s) in the race
___ two news articles discussing the race (by links)
___ two key quotations from the articles explaining why the race is going the way it's going.

The Essay:

In a two-three page, double-spaced, Time New Roman or other normal font size 12, essay, please predict the outcome of the Congressional elections this fall, and explain why you predicted the outcome you did.  The explanation should cite at least five sources, and should discuss not only your races but, more importantly, the whole deal around the country.  The essay should

___  clearly state how many Democratic and Republican Senators will be in the next Congress;
___  clearly state how many Democratic and Republican Representatives will be in the next Congress;
___  cite five different sources discussing the Congressional elections;
___  provide three main arguments supporting the prediction, with at least two citations supporting each argument;
___  have a clear introduction containing an underlined thesis statement, a solid set of body paragraphs, and a clear conclusion;
___  have 1" margins all around;
___  be given a clever or catchy title and have your name on it; and
___  be submitted, via email, no later than 7:45 am on Monday, 1 November 2010.

For Monday, 18 October

In class today, on paper (the old-fashioned way), please answer, with details, specifics, your thoughts, ideas and opinions--as well as any specific references to the information in the textbook or in your notes--the following question:

As the text notes, the meaning of federalism has changed through years.  Based on what we've covered thus far this year and focusing on the information in this chapter, is this evolution/change in the meaning of federalism a good thing?  Why or why not?

Your response to this question should

___  include at least three specific responses, each of which include at least two specific details supporting the response;
___  have a solid introduction and conclusion
___  include good, solid transitions from idea to idea
___  site the text when and where appropriate.

If you work hard on this on Monday, you will have Tuesday also to work on it.  You do NOT need to work on this for homework. 

What you complete on Monday should be turned into the substitute for me to distribute on Tuesday.

____  finding the latest polls on each race
____  writing the results of the most recent polls
____  briefly describing any change in the polls from last week
____  sending the results to me at cooperw@mersd.org

In addition, please
____  go to RealClearPolitics.com and fivethirtyeight.com
____  find one article at each site which discusses this fall's election campaign (don't just go for the first article you see)
____  jot down the points where the articles agree and disagree (sort of a compare/contrast)
____  email me the links to the articles over the weekend or Monday evening, and
____  bring your jottings to class on Tuesday.
